Iraqi security and military officials on Saturday met with commanders of NATO and French Forces in the region to reinforce security coordination and partnerships.

DUBAI, UAE - Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji and Joint Operations Deputy Commander Qais al-Muhammadi met separately on Saturday with Lucas Schreurs, Commander of NATO Mission Iraq, and Hugues Laine, Joint Commander of the French Forces deployed in the Indian Ocean, to discuss continued security cooperation and training initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Iraqi security forces.

In his meeting with Schreurs, Araji underscored Iraq’s commitment to collaborating with NATO, noting the importance of the alliance’s advisory and training role, which does not involve combat operations, according to a statement from the advisor’s office.

The two discussed reinforcing cooperation frameworks and highlighted the benefits of exchanging information and expertise, particularly in training Iraqi security personnel.

“Working with NATO remains a priority for Iraq as we focus on strengthening our security forces,” Araji said, adding that Iraq values the ongoing support from the alliance.

Schreurs also stressed the need to continue the exchange of expertise between the two sides.

Separately, Muhammadi received Rear Admiral Laine and his accompanying. Muhammadi emphasized that the skills Iraqi forces developed during battles with the Islamic State (ISIS) had contributed significantly to strengthening both military units and intelligence networks, which remain engaged in targeting remnants of the militant group.

The deputy commander advocated for bilateral agreements that align with Iraq’s constitution, government policies, and strategic security goals. He also stressed the importance of advancing Iraqi forces through access to modern technology and technical equipment, expressing gratitude for France’s support during the ISIS conflict.

Laine commended the progress Iraqi forces have achieved, noting the high operational standards and capabilities of Iraq’s security forces, according to a statement from the Iraqi Security Media Cell.
