ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - More than 160 suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members have been killed and dozens of others captured in since late August in operations conducted by the US troops in partnership with local security forces in Iraq and Syria.
The Central Command (CENTCOM) on Monday announced it has conducted 95 partnered operations against ISIS remnants in Iraq and Syria since August 29 “some of which included unilateral strikes in Syria.”
“These operations resulted in 163 terrorists killed and 33 captured, including over 30 senior and mid-level ISIS leaders,” read the CENTCOM statement, adding that “significant” ISIS materiel were also seized in the operations.
“Alongside our coalition and Iraqi partners, we will continue to aggressively pursue these terrorists and disrupt their capability to conduct operations against U.S. interests, as well as those of our allies and partners,” the statement cited General Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command, as saying.
Despite being territorially defeated in Iraq 2017 and in Syria in 2019, ISIS militants continue to pose a security threat in both countries through hit-and-run operations and attacks on remote areas.
CENTCOM on Thursday announced that up to 35 ISIS operatives were killed as a result a series of strikes targeting known camps of the militant group in Syria the night before.
Iraqi forces have also intensified their efforts to eliminate ISIS remnants in recent months, especially in provinces like Kirkuk, Anbar, and Nineveh, where the group’s cells remain active.
