ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraqi and Kurdish leaders on Wednesday extended their congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential elections, expressing hope for further cooperation and stronger ties with Washington.

Republican nominee Trump is set to make a historic return to the White House after he secured the 270 electoral votes required to be elected as President of the United States, besting his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Kurdish and Iraqi officials joined world leaders in congratulating the American president-elect.

“I look forward to deepening the partnership between the Kurdistan Region and the United States, and working together to advance peace and stability in the region,” wrote Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in his congratulatory message to Trump.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani extended his “warmest congratulations” to Trump and his running mate JD Vance on their elections victory.

“I look forward to working together to further strengthen our partnership and deepen the bilateral ties between the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the United States,” wrote the Kurdistan Region president.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani also congratulated Trump, Vance, and the American people on their success in the elections, reaffirming Baghdad’s commitment to strengthening ties with Washington “grounded in mutual respect and shared interests.”

“We look forward to this new phase as an opportunity to deepen cooperation across various sectors, contributing to sustainable development, and benefiting both our nations,” wrote Sudani.

Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid congratulated Trump on his reelection, saying that he is “hopeful that the new American administration will foster much-needed stability and constructive dialogue in the region.”

The Iraqi judiciary issued an arrest warrant for Trump in 2021 over the killing of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani and Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) deputy chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in an American airstrike near Baghdad International Airport a year prior.
