ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq has not received any information or messages regarding Israel’s intention to launch an attack against the country, said an advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister on Saturday, noting that the government is monitoring the situation in case of any emergency.
Subhan Mulla Jiyad, political advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, told The New Region on Saturday that the concerns of a potential Israeli attack on Iraq are based solely on speculations of international reports and news outlets, stressing that “there is no real information” regarding such an attack.
“Iraq has not received any information, confirmations or messages from any regional or international party that Israel wants to launch any strike on Iraq. There is nothing official in this regard,” said Jiyad.
“Everything related to this is just media statements and press reports only,” the advisor added.
Iraq has so far managed to shield itself from the conflict's direct effects, but continued attacks by pro-Iran Iraqi armed factions against Israeli targets have raised concerns of a potential Israeli retaliation.
Abdulrahman al-Jazaeri, a senior leader in the ruling Shiite Coordination Framework, previously told The New Region that the Iraqi government has been privately exerting pressure on the armed factions to stop their attacks on Israel, as to not grant Israel any justification to attack Iraq.
"The Iraqi government does not want war, but rather it is working to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza and Lebanon, and it is making great foreign diplomatic efforts… Iraq is an important pivotal element in the region and the world, and that is why it is playing this role in calming the situation, and it does not want to be part of any escalation,” Jiyad told The New Region in late October.
Two Israeli soldiers were killed and 24 others wounded in an attack on the annexed Golan Heights launched from Iraq in early October.
Sudani in October said that “the decision of war and peace” was in the hands of the government, warning “anyone who deviates from that will face the state,” likely referring to the armed groups, which have launched hundreds of attacks against Israeli and American interests in the region October 2023.
