ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A restaurant in Erbil was shut down by local authorities on Tuesday, shortly after it announced adding a fancy item named “Kurdistan” to its menu, serving one person for nearly $90,000, with the entire cutlery set to be made of gold and diamond.
“The restaurant which was promoting selling expensive food was shut down, based on the governor’s decision,” read a statement from the Erbil governor’s office, adding the restaurant had exploited “the sacred name of Kurdistan” to sell “a meal for an extremely expensive price.”
The restaurant was closed down due to its “failure to comply with the laws and regulations,” the statement added.
The news was first reported by Ava Media, a Kurdish TV channel that partners with The New Region.
Prior to the closure of the restaurant, Mohammed Falah, manager of Aland Steakhouse, spoke to The New Region about the planned meal.
“This meal will become the world’s most expensive ever served to a customer,” he said.
“Anyone interested in eating this dish can make a reservation from today. The meal will take three months to prepare,” Falah said.
“Some key features of the dish are that it will be prepared out of golden caviar that is taken out from a sturgeon’s abdomen many miles deep down the ocean, cod liver oil, and cemani chicken, as well as several other birds and meats.”
“All this food will be served using cutlery made of gold, diamond, and some of the world’s finest coffees."
A hookah worth $1 million, made of gold and diamond, allegedly by the automobile manufacturing giant Porsche, was reportedly also a part of the expensive menu item.
Interested customers had to submit their resumes when asking for a reservation and then wait for three months. The would-be customers were required to have a clean criminal record.
The closure of the restaurant over the controversial meal was widely welcomed across the Kurdistan Region.
The three most expensive dishes in the world in 2024, according to Luxhabitat, are: The Chocolate Pudding at London’s Lindeth Howe Country House for $35,000, the Grand Velas Tacos at the Grand Velas Los Cabos Resort's Frida restaurant in Mexico for $25,000, and the Frrrozen Haute Chocolate at New York City’s Serendipity Cafe for $25,000.
