ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday held meetings with several regional officials on the sidelines of the Doha Forum, emphasizing the need to provide support for the Syrian people and reiterating Tehran’s support for Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Araghchi told reporters that he held separate meetings with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan and Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, addressing the situation in Syria and emphasizing what should be done to support the people of Syria and protect the country’s territorial integrity and unity.

“Developments in the region are happening very quickly, and we are witnessing a fluid situation, and it is natural that we continue to support the people and government of Syria,” said the Iranian top diplomat.

“This is a political campaign in which we must play a role.”

Araghchi added that a trilateral meeting will be held between the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, and Turkey - the guarantors of the Astana Format.

The Syrian army on Saturday announced it redeployed from Daraa and Suwayda provinces following clashes with local factions. The army conducted "a redeployment, repositioning, and establishment of a strong and cohesive defensive and security cordon in that direction," it said

The regime has now lost control of four major cities since the start of the recent campaign by anti-government groups on November 27, and also lost full control of Idlib, some parts of which were already held by opposition forces.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei on Saturday dismissed the reports on the evacuation of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, stressing that the diplomatic mission continues its activities as usual.

Iran has been a main supporter of Assad’s regime throughout the Syrian civil war. Thousands of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) soldiers were deployed to Syria after 2011, and dozens of other Iran-backed armed groups remain active in the country.

The foreign ministers of Syria, Iraq, and Iran held a trilateral meeting in Baghdad on Friday to address the escalating security crisis in Syria, emphasizing regional collaboration to de-escalate tensions, as an Islamist-led rebel offensive dealt massive blows to Assad’s forces.
