ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq and the Kurdistan Region on Saturday condemned the deadly car attack on a Christmas market in central Germany, in which at least five people were killed and over 200 others injured.
Families were gathered at a Christmas market in Germany’s Magdeburg on Friday night when an SUV drove into the crowd at high speed, killing and injuring hundreds of people.
Kurdistan Region officials joined other world leaders in expressing condolences and solidarity.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said he was “appalled by the horrific attack,” and conveyed his condolences.
“I convey my condolences to the people and government of Germany and my thoughts are with the victims and their families at this difficult time,” wrote the Kurdish premier on X.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani condemned the incident, stating that the Region stands with the people of Germany following the “barbaric attack.”
“In the Kurdistan Region, we stand with the German people during these difficult times. Our hearts and thoughts are with the families of the victims, and we wish the injured a swift recovery,” he wrote on X.
Iraq’s foreign ministry also condemned the attack, expressing its solidarity with the people and government of Germany, while also extending condolences to the victims' families and wishing a speedy recovery for the wounded.
The ministry reiterated “Iraq's firm position in rejecting violence and extremism in all its forms and manifestation.”
German police arrested a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, who has been in Germany since 2006, as the main suspect in the incident
No groups have claimed responsibility for the attack, and German media have stated the motives behind the incident remain unclear.
