ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday said that Amman stands with Syria during the transitional phase, expressing hope that the upcoming Syrian government encompasses all the country’s components.

Safadi arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Monday morning alongside a high-level delegation and met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the de facto leader of the new Syrian administration.

The Jordanian top diplomat described the meeting with Sharaa as “honest and positive,” expressing his country’s willingness to support the new Syrian administration’s efforts in the reconstruction of the war-torn country.

Safadi said that Sharaa understands the significance of Jordan-Syria relations and the importance of joint cooperation between the two countries.

“We agree [with Arab nations] to support the Syrian people in rebuilding their state,” Safadi told reporters in Damascus. “We support the transitional process in Syria and the drafting of a new constitution for the country.”

The foreign minister also noted that Jordan is keen on providing support for Syrian refugees, displaced by the country’s 13-year civil war, stressing that their return to the country needs to be voluntary.

An 11-day sweeping rebel offensive spearheaded by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, brought a five-decade-long rule of the Assad family to an end on December 8.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday visited Damascus and met with Sharaa, where they were seen taking a tour of the capital and eventually drinking tea together on top of Mount Qasioun.

Sharaa also received with a Qatari delegation on Monday headed by Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is the first time a delegation from Doha has visited Syria in 13 years after severing ties with the previous regime.

The UN migration agency (IOM) last week advised against any “large-scale” return of Syrian refugees back to the country until greater stability is achieved.
