ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region leaders and the Iraqi foreign ministry on Wednesday condemned the deadly car attack in New Orleans, Louisiana, in which at least 15 people were killed and dozens others injured.
A man drove a pickup truck into a large crowd of revelers at Bourbon Street hours after the clock struck midnight on Wednesday, killing at least 15 and injuring 35 others. The suspect was killed in a shootout with law enforcement after exiting his vehicle.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) later identified the subject as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen, adding that an Islamic State (ISIS) flag was located inside his vehicle.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the deadly, expressing solidarity with the victims, their families, and the American people.
“Our people have made enormous sacrifices in the war on terror. It remains a threat to the wider region and beyond” the Kurdish premier wrote on X.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also condemned the attack, which he said targeted “innocent people,” extending his thoughts and prayers to those affected by the “vicious act.”
“We stand with the American people during this difficult time,” he added.
The Iraqi foreign ministry expressed its “strong condemnation and denunciation” of the attack, extending its condolences to the government and people of the US, “in particular the families of the victims.”
“The ministry reiterates Iraq’s firm stance in condemning all forms of violence targeting civilians,” read a statement.
Hours before the FBI identified the perpetrator US President-elect Donald Trump said on social media that the attack confirms his remarks that “the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country.”
Jabbar, a real estate agent from Texas, was born and raised in the southern US state and served more than 10 years in the US military.
