ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Masrour Barzani met UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, discussing “strong bilateral ties and developments in the region.”
“I am pleased to see my brother HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi,” PM Barzani wrote on X. “We discussed bilateral ties and developments in the region.”
According to a statement by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the two sides "discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the broader region."
It detailed that the two leaders "emphasized the importance of strengthening the longstanding friendship between the Kurdistan Region and the UAE.
PM Barzani and al-Nahyan "explored opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation and coordination across a range of sectors.”
The Kurdistan Region and the UAE enjoy close ties across many sectors.
The UAE-based giant Dana Gas company has played a pivotal role in the production of the Kurdistan Region’s natural gas since 2007. The company currently works in the Khor Mor and Chemchemal fields.
In addition to investments, the UAE provided support to the Kurdistan Region in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), mainly through humanitarian assistance to the displaced and refugees.
Prime Minister Barzani's meeting with the UAE president comes ahead of a visit to Switzerland where the Kurdish premier is set to take part in the World Economic Forum in Davos.
