ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Skeletal remains of a number of people were discovered inside a water tank in the predominantly Yezidi town of Sinjar, a human rights monitor announced.
The Petrichor Organization for Human Rights announced the remains are believed to be the victims of the Islamic State (ISIS) massacre in August 2014.
“In the town of Tal Banat, Sinjar district, we discovered the remains of many people inside a water tank,” Petrichor said.
It added that remains “date back to the ISIS takeover of the region.”
The watchdog said they had handed over the skeletons to the relevant Iraqi government authorities to identify.
ISIS militants seized control of the Sinjar district in August 2014, displacing an estimated 400,000, with tens of thousands besieged in Sinjar.
The extremist group killed around 5,000 Yazidi men, some of whom were put into mass graves. Around 7,000 women and girls were enslaved.
Over 80 mass graves of Yazidis have been found in Sinjar district in northern Iraq since 2014, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
