ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A series of earthquakes with the most powerful at 4.8 magnitudes and the depth of 10 kilometers, hit the Kurdistan Region’s Garmiyan in the early hours of Monday.
“The first 3.4 magnitude quake occurred at 03:14 am. And then at 4:02 am, another quake at 4.8 magnitude and the depth of 10 kilometers occurred,” Mohammed Kamal, an official from the Kurdistan Region’s metrology and seismic department, told The New Region.
Three other quakes followed the first two tremors, Kamal added.
The official said that the shocks were felt in Sulaimani city center, and some residents in the affected areas ran out of their homes.
There were no reports of injuries or damage.
The Kurdistan Region’s Garmiyan region is no stranger to earthquakes.
In 2019, a deadly 6.3 earthquake tremor rocked Garmiyan, killing two people and wounding 50 more, as well as causing significant material damage.
The Iraqi General Meteorological and Seismological Board reported earlier this month that over 500 earthquakes occurred across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in 2024, spanning magnitudes from 1.0 to 6.2, with many occurring in Garmiyan.
