Netanyahu’s office announced on Tuesday that a delegation will be sent to Doha by the end of the week to discuss details of the second stage of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Tuesday that a delegation would be sent to Doha by the end of the week to discuss details of the second stage of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

“Israel is preparing for the working-level delegation to leave for Doha at the end of this week to discuss technical details related to the continued implementation of the agreement,” read a statement by the Israeli PM’s office on Tuesday.

The Gaza ceasefire was structured in three phases. Phase one took effect on January 19 and is set to see the release of 33 Israeli hostages in total, in exchange for the release of 1900 prisoners in Israeli jails, and a temporary laydown of arms by both parties, during the 42 days of the first phase.

Only 18 of the total of 33 hostages have been handed over to Israel by Hamas at the time of this writing, in exchange for the liberation of hundreds of prisoners by Israel.

The truce’s phase two looks to reach a more permanent truce and the release of the remainder of the hostages and prisoners between the two sides.

According to the agreement, talks on phase two are supposed to start less than 16 days after the beginning of phase one.

Israeli PM Netanyahu is in Washington and set to meet Trump on Tuesday to discuss the future of the ceasefire deal.

Trump on Sunday said that talks with Israel and Middle Eastern countries were “progressing,” but less than 24 hours later, he said there were “no guarantees that the peace is going to hold”.

Hamas, for their part, has also confirmed their readiness to initiate talks on phase two, an official of the Palestinian militant group told AFP on Monday.

“Hamas has informed the mediators, during ongoing communications and meetings held with Egyptian mediators last week in Cairo, that we are ready to start the negotiations for the second phase,” the official said.

The ceasefire came after a number of high-level negotiations took place in Doha, mediated by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt, to end over 15 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas that has claimed over 46,000 lives and left more than 109,000 injured.
