ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit in Dubai, discussing regional developments and stressing the need for “deeper ties” between Erbil and Abu Dhabi.
“It is always a pleasure to meet with my brother H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed,” PM Barzani wrote on X. “We discussed regional developments and our shared vision for economic growth, stability, and deeper ties between the Kurdistan Region and the UAE."
Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and Sasan Auni, minister of Municipalities and Tourism also attended the meeting.
This is PM Barzani’s second meeting with the UAE President in over three weeks after the two leaders met on January 19 in Abu Dhabi, discussing “strong bilateral ties.”
The Kurdistan Region and the UAE enjoy close ties across many sectors.
The UAE-based giant Dana Gas company has played a pivotal role in the production of the Kurdistan Region’s natural gas since 2007. The company currently works in the Khor Mor and Chemchemal fields.
In addition to investments, the UAE provided support to the Kurdistan Region in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), mainly through humanitarian assistance to the displaced and refugees.
The top KRG delegation is in Dubai for the World Governments Summit, which kicked off on Tuesday with the theme “Shaping Future Governments” and runs until Thursday.
Thirty heads of state and government, 140 governmental delegations, and 400 ministers are attending the event.
“One of the World Governments Summit’s key themes will explore the critical questions governments are grappling with to ensure their policies are aligned with their citizens’ needs, and how these efforts can be effectively achieved and monitored,” according to the World Government’s Summit Organization.
