ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Coordinating Committee of the Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iraqi armed factions, is set to hold an urgent meeting in the coming days to discuss the latest developments in Yemen and Gaza, sources told The New Region on Wednesday.
The sources said committee leaders are in daily contact to monitor the situation following the US military operation against the Houthis in Yemen and the renewed Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.
The meeting aims to establish a unified position on whether to continue supporting military operations under the “Unity of Fronts” strategy. A final decision is expected within two days.
Iraq's influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has already cautioned that Israel wants to reach Iraqi borders.
Israel on Tuesday resumed its most deadly strikes on the Gaza Strip since a January 19 ceasefire between it and Hamas.
The aerial campaign, which came after the collapse of talks on extending the fragile ceasefire, has claimed the lives of up to 470 people.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned late Tuesday that the strikes were "only the beginning" and that future negotiations with Hamas "will take place only under fire.” Netanyahu has attributed the renewed campaign on Gaza to “Hamas' repeated refusal to release” the remaining hostages.
Hamas condemned the renewed attacks, calling them a “coup” by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against the ceasefire. The group said in a statement that Netanyahu’s government was “resuming aggression and genocide against unarmed civilians in Gaza.”
Meanwhile, US forces have been conducting air and naval strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen since March 15. President Donald Trump ordered the attacks in response to the group’s military activities in the Red Sea and its support for Palestinian factions.
Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, in a televised speech followed by The New Region, accused the US of attacking Yemen due to their support for Palestine, vowing to continue confronting American and Israeli aggression, warning that US warships and naval assets could become targets.
“Our maritime blockade may also extend to American forces if their aggression persists,” al-Houthi said, adding that the attacks would only strengthen the group's military capabilities. “We will respond to escalation with escalation.”
