ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Syria condemns Israeli attacks on the country’s south a day earlier, which killed at least six people, slamming them as an “ongoing aggression” and a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.
“The heavy artillery and air bombardment targeted residential and farming areas, leading to the death of six civilians,” the Syrian foreign ministry said, slamming "the continued Israeli aggression on Syrian territory, which saw a dangerous escalation in the village of Koayiah," in the southern Daraa province.
The Israeli military said Tuesday they targeted the border village in response to incoming fire from across the demarcation line.
"This escalation comes in the context of a series of violations that started with Israeli forces' penetrating Quneitra and Daraa provinces, in an ongoing aggression on Syrian territory, in flagrant violation of national sovereignty and international law," the ministry said.
Local media in Syria have reported that over 350 families from the region fled for their lives after the deadly Israeli strikes.
Israel’s Tuesday strikes triggered widespread condemnations from several regional and neighboring countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, urging Israel to put an end to its aggressions on Syria.
Ever since the toppling of Bashar al-Assad in early December, Israel has intensified operations on the military infrastructure of the previous regime, targeting what it describes as the country’s most strategic weapons. Israel has already claimed to have neutralized over 90 percent of the country’s surface-to-air missile systems, causing severe damage to the country’s air defense capabilities.
On Friday and Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes pounded "military capabilities that remained at the Syrian military bases of Tadmur and T4” in the city of Palmyra and a nearby region.
Additionally, Israeli ground forces have advanced several kilometers into the Syrian Golan Heights, entering the demilitarized zone established in 1974 after the fall of Assad. The United Nations, neighboring countries, and the international community have condemned the incursion as a violation of the Israel-Syria disengagement agreement.
