Spokesperson of the Iraqi electoral body Jumana al-Ghalai announced that one million new voters will be able to cast their ballots in Iraq's 2025 parliamentary elections, with the total number of eligible voters expected to exceed 29 million

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – More than one million new voters can now file documentation to cast their ballots in upcoming Iraqi elections, an electoral commission official told state media on Wednesday.

Iraq is expected to hold elections to establish the sixth term of the Iraq Parliament later this year.

Spokesperson of Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) Jumana al-Ghalai stressed the need “to register security forces, displaced persons, and citizens registering for the first time, in addition to those born in 2007, whose number exceeds one million new voters.”

Speaking regarding the registration of internally displaced people (IDPs), Ghalai told Iraqi state media that “registration of displaced persons will take place within the [IDP] camps, while Sinjar IDPs are entitled to update their biometric data both inside and outside the camps.”

Iraq’s elections body announced on Monday that it would begin the voter registry update process on Tuesday, which is set to last one month.

At least 25 million Iraqis were eligible to vote in the 2021 parliamentary elections, with this figure being expected to exceed 29 million for the 2025 elections.
