The Kurdistan Region’s Security Council said that the suspect is a Syrian national with extremist beliefs.

 

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Kurdistan Region's Presidency on Wednesday condemned the Tuesday attack on an Assyrian Christian celebration in Duhok, reiterating the Region’s commitment to the values of coexistence and tolerance.

 

Two people were injured in a cleaver attack in Duhok on Tuesday, targeting Christians during a celebration of Akitu - the Babylonian-Assyrian New Year and a celebration of the revival of nature in the spring

 

The Kurdistan Region's Presidency condemned the incident in a statement on Wednesday, reassuring that the Region remains a hub of “coexistence” for all communities residing in it.

 

“While strongly condemning this crime, we assure all Kurdistanis that the Kurdistan Region will always be a homeland of coexistence, peace, and stability for all its communities. Damaging the culture of coexistence, mutual acceptance, and tolerance will never be allowed," the statement read.

 

Duhok Governor Ali Tatar on Tuesday also strongly condemned the “inhumane” attack during a press conference, confirming that the suspect has been apprehended and an investigation has been launched, vowing to protect all communities of the Kurdistan Region.

 

The Kurdistan Region’s Security Council said that the suspect is a Syrian national “with terrorist beliefs belonging to ISIS [the Islamic State].”

 

Hundreds of Chaldeans, Assyrians, and Syriacs attended a celebration in Duhok, marking the Babylonian-Assyrian 6775 New Year.
