Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani discussed the latest developments in Syria and the need for Kurdish unity in the country, in a meeting with Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani discussed the latest developments in Syria and the need for Kurdish unity in the country, in a meeting with Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

"The meeting focused on recent developments in Syria, including the relations between the Syrian Democratic Forces and Kurdish political parties, their ties with the Syrian government, and the ongoing challenges related to terrorism and the fight against ISIS,” read a statement by the Kurdistan Region Presidency on Thursday.

Abdi, who was in Erbil on an unannounced visit, and President Barzani stressed the importance of "including Kurds and all communities in Syria in the country’s governance and administration, to ensure the rights of all.

The two leaders found it crucial for Kurdish leadership in Syria to foster "unity and coordination among Kurdish factions and political groups in Syria in achieving the Kurdish people’s aspirations and legitimate rights.”

Kurdish authorities have repeatedly criticized Damascus for the lack of inclusion of ethnic and religious minority groups in the transitional process.

The Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC or ENKS) on Tuesday set Saturday, April 26, as the date for the Kurdish Unity Conference, which is set to see an amalgamation of Kurdish political and civic organizations, and coordinate policy about the Damascus government.

The conference aims to unify the position of Kurdish parties in Syria and present a united front in talks with the new administration in Damascus.

Abdi has already commended the conference as necessary to establish “Kurdish unity” in Syria.

In late February, Syria, under its new authorities, held a National Dialogue Conference aimed at obtaining suggestions for governance in the transitional period from all of the country’s components.

The Kurdish administration of north and east Syria described the conference as “disappointing,” saying that it does not represent all Syrian components.

Abdi’s meeting with President Barzani came hours after the former met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot in the Kurdistan Region’s capital city of Erbil.
