Fans of both teams will be banned from attending their teams’ home matches for the rest of the season, following last week’s altercations.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Iraqi Football Association (IFA) on Tuesday announced a package of disciplinary measures against the teams of Newroz and Zakho, including banning their fans from attending their teams’ home matches for the rest of the season, following last week’s altercations.

In the final minutes of the match between Newroz and Zakho, which took place in the former’s stadium in Sulaimani last week, violent clashes broke out between the fans of the two sides. The clashes erupted after the referee ruled out a goal by Zakho for offside in the 79th minute.

Fans of both teams began throwing various objects at each other before storming the pitch and escalating the violence, which led to the suspension of the match.

The IFA’s disciplinary committee announced a package of six disciplinary measures against both teams in response to the chaos.

The measures included banning fans of both teams from attending their teams' home matches until the end of the 2024-2025 season, imposing a fine of 25 million Iraqi dinars on each club, and “granting injured persons the right to file lawsuits to claim financial compensation.”

The measures also required teams from the Kurdistan Region to “provide adequate and qualified security protection” in accordance with the regulations of the IFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Warning and suspending the match supervisor from performing his duties until the end of the season was also included in the package, citing “poor security assessment.”

The IFA also announced that the match will continue from the 80th minute at a later date.

At least 30 people were injured in last week’s altercations, and hundreds of the venue’s seats were damaged.
