ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Israel vowed on Sunday that it would strongly respond to a missile fired from Yemen, after the country’s military and police confirmed it had "impacted" near Ben Gurion airport, injuring six people.
The missile, which the Israeli military said it attempted to intercept, impacted inside the airport’s perimeter, triggering sirens across central Israel.
"Several attempts were made to intercept the missile launched from Yemen. A fall was identified in the area of Ben Gurion airport,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz in a statement threatened that they were preparing for a counterattack.
"Anyone who hits us, we will hit them seven times stronger," Katz said.
The missile attack briefly suspended flights at the country’s largest and busiest airport.
Repeated efforts by Houthi rebels to target Israel with ballistic missiles have seen little success, with the latter’s advanced defense infrastructure resulting in numerous intercepts. Battered by US airstrikes, the Yemeni militant group appears to remain actively targeting Tel Aviv in solidarity with its Palestinian allies.
On Friday, Israel’s military announced that it had shot down a suspected Houthi missile fired from Yemen as it was en route to the country.
Battered by US and, as of recently, British airstrikes, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have continued to fight against what they describe as “Israeli-American aggression."
The Houthis began a campaign targeting international shipping in the wake of the Palestinian group Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, with over 100 merchant vessels having been targeted by Houthi militants in the period since.
Israel operates a sophisticated air defense system comprising myriad shelters and sirens designed to protect its population, as well as ground-to-air missiles designed to intercept incoming projectiles.
