ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Israeli warplanes on Tuesday carried out airstrikes on multiple locations in Yemen’s capital Sanaa, including the international airport, under the pretext of targeting infrastructure of the Houthi rebels.
The airstrikes targeted Sanaa’s airport, multiple power stations, a concrete factory, and various other sites in the Yemeni capital, according to Houthi-affiliated media. The attack comes a day after a Houthi missile impacted near Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel, marking the first successful strike by the Yemeni group after last weekend’s barrage failed to breach Israeli air defenses.
Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed after the Ben Gurion strikes that they would respond “seven times stronger.”
The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the attacks on Tuesday, alleging that the airport is used by the Houthis “to transfer weapons and operatives, and is regularly operated by the Houthi regime for terrorist purposes.”
“The attacks were carried out in a targeted manner, taking precautions to the extent possible to minimize harm to civilians and civilian property,” the statement from the Israeli military added.
The Houthis later on Tuesday pledged that the Israeli airstrikes "will not pass without a response," in a statement by the Yemeni rebel group's political bureau, who added that the offensive "aims to impose a blockade on the Yemeni people."
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have carried out hundreds of attacks against Israel and Israeli interests in the region since October 2023 in protest of the Zionist regime’s aggression in Gaza. Most of the attacks have been intercepted by Israel’s advanced defense infrastructure.
