ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iran has agreed to a proposal from mediator Oman to hold a fresh round of indirect talks with the US on the nuclear issue on Sunday, the foreign minister announced.
Through the mediation of Oman, the US and Iran have held three rounds of indirect talks since April, aimed at negotiating a deal on Iran’s nuclear program.
A fourth round of talks was set to be held earlier this month but was postponed due to “logistical reasons.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday announced that a new round of talks is scheduled for Sunday.
“The time and place of the talks will be determined by the host country or intermediary, which is Oman. Omani friends asked about Sunday and we expressed our agreement,” said Araghchi, adding that Muscat has also discussed the subject with the American side.
The Iranian top diplomat noted that the negotiations are moving forward, explaining that the more progress is made, the more time they need for consultations and consultations.
“We are moving in the direction of the principles that have been designed, but we are receiving contradictory messages from the other side,” Araghchi added.
US President Donald Trump, during his first term in 2018, walked away from a landmark nuclear deal with Iran, which was introduced three years earlier in 2015 by his predecessor Barack Obama. Known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the deal provided sanctions relief to Iran in exchange for the placement of curbs on Iran’s nuclear program.
The US and Western powers seek robust assurances that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons, while Tehran maintains that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes and that it has no plans to develop nuclear weapons.
