Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is set to address the United Nations in September, marking a significant step in Damascus' pursuit of international recognition and support.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is set to visit the United States in September and deliver a speech at a meeting at the United Nations, Syrian state TV reported on Tuesday.

“Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will visit the United States in September and deliver a speech at a meeting at the United Nations,” Syrian State TV said, citing “exclusive sources.”

The news of Sharaa visiting the US comes less than a month after he met US President Donald Trump in Riyadh in mid-May in the presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The meeting took place during a Gulf tour by Trump during which he announced a decision to lift all sanctions on Syria “in order to give them a chance at greatness.”

Prior to his meeting with Trump, Sharaa in April received a US delegation headed by two congressmen on an unofficial visit, which marked the first trip to Damascus by American legislators since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December.

Washington has enacted several tentative moves to facilitate the new government in Syria, such as removing sanctions and waiving a 10 million-dollar bounty on Sharaa in December, with the US administration feeling out its capacity to work with the interim government.
