ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region’s counterterrorism forces on Wednesday announced shooting down a suicide drone in Erbil’s southwest, amid escalating regional tensions.

“At around 18:43 PM, near the village of Sherawa, a bomb-laden drone was intercepted and shot down,” read a statement from the Erbil-based Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD), on Wednesday.

“Fortunately, it did not result in any casualties or material damage,” the statement added.

The incident comes as tensions have escalated between Iran and Israel in recent days, after Israel launched a large-scale offensive early Friday, targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities across the country. Iran has responded to the strikes, firing hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones toward Israeli territories, most of which have been intercepted by Israel’s air defenses.

Both sides have used Iraqi airspace for their attacks. Footage have circulated on social media in recent days, showing debris believed to be from Iranian projectiles landing across several provinces of Iraq.

The remnants of a projectile were found in Erbil’s Shamamk area on Tuesday. Residents have also posted photos and videos of multiple projectiles crashing in the Kurdistan Region’s capital, and in some instances starting a blaze.

In a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the Kurdistan Region Council of Ministers on Wednesday stressed the “unwavering stance of the Kurdistan Region, which has always opposed war, tension and destruction,” adding that Erbil has always been “an important factor of peace, tranquility, and stability, and will not be a threat to any of its neighboring countries or any other party.”

The Kurdistan Region Presidency on Friday condemned the Israeli attack, arguing that the move “complicates the security and stability of the region,” while calling on the international community to intervene and stop further escalation of tensions.
