MILAN, Italy – United States President Donald Trump on Saturday described the US strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities as “a spectacular military success,” threatening further attacks on the Islamic republic if it does not “make peace.”
Trump on Saturday announced that they have joined Israel in striking Iran, targeting the Islamic republic’s main uranium enrichment facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow.
In an Address to the Nation following the strikes, the American president said they had carried out “massive precision strikes” on the three key nuclear facilities. “Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror.”
“Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated,” Trump claimed.
Trump confirmed that the US and Israel coordinated on the attacks. “We worked as a team, like perhaps no team has ever worked before.”
“Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier…This cannot continue. There will be wither peace, or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days,” he added.
Iran and Israel have traded fire over the past week, sparked by an extensive Israeli bombardment targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities across the country. The US initially denied involvement in Israel’s attacks on Iran.
Israel has repeatedly stated that its aim is to cripple Iran's burgeoning nuclear program, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accusing Tehran of “marching very quickly” toward the production of a nuclear weapon. Iran has maintained that its uranium enrichment program is peaceful and that it has no plans to develop a nuclear weapon.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump claimed that Israel does not “have the capacity” to take out all of Iran’s nuclear facilities without American help.
Israel has specifically targeted Iran’s Natanz nuclear research facility in Isfahan, and had made public its intention to target Fordow Enrichment Plant near the city of Qom.
Following the US strikes, Iran's Atomic Energy Organization called the attacks “a brutal act that contradicts international laws, especially the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).”
The statement from the agency said that they expect international community to condemn the attack and support Iran in “achieving its legitimate rights.”
The agency added that despite the attacks, they will not allow the development of their nuclear program “be stopped.”
