ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iran announced the launch of operation “Good Tidings of Conquest” against US bases in the region on Monday, with American bases in Qatar being targeted as part of the operation in its early stages.
Loud explosions were heard in Doha on Monday evening, eyewitnesses told The New Region, followed shortly after by Iranian state media confirming an operation launched by Iran to strike regional US bases as payback for an earlier operation by the US targeting Iran's nuclear facilities.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later confirmed that they have targeted the al-Udeid Base near Doha with “a devastating and powerful missile attack” as part of the operation.
“[Iran] will not leave any attack on its territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national security unanswered under any circumstances,” the IRGC added.
The strikes prompted regional reactions, with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates condemning the attack, and Iraq voicing concern over a potential spillover of the conflict into the wider region.
The Iranian attack came against the background of an earlier operation by the United States, codenamed “Midnight Hammer,” which targeted Iran's nuclear facilities, namely Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, using American bunker busting bombs and B-2 bomber aircrafts.
Qatar's foreign ministry released a statement in response, “strongly” condemning the attack, while asserting that Doha “reserves the right to respond directly in a manner equivalent with the nature and scale of this brazen aggression.”
The Qatari statement noted that “the base had been evacuated earlier, following established security and precautionary measures,” and confirmed that there had been “no injuries or human casualties.”
NBC News, citing an unnamed senior White House official reported that US President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, and other US officials were monitoring the developments from the White House Situation Room.
In a post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump described the Iranian attack as “a very weak response, which we expected, and have very effectively countered,” confirming that no Qatar or US citizens were killed in the strikes.
Trump added that, of the 14 missiles fired, “13 were knocked down, and 1 was 'set free,' because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction.”
“I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured,” said Trump, implying that the US had foreknowledge of the strikes.
The American president also thanked Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for “all that he has done in seeking peace for the region.”
