ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Temperatures on Monday are set to reach 50 degrees Celsius in Iraq's southern provinces of Dhi Qar, Maysan, and Basra provinces, the country's meteorology announced.
"The maximum temperature will be 47 in Baghdad, Diwaniyah and Babylon, 46 in Diyala and Karbala, 41 in Erbil and Nineveh, 37 in Duhok, 42 in Sulaimani, 43 in Kirkuk and Anbar, 49 in Muthanna, 48 in Najaf and Wasit, 49 in Muthanna, 50 in Basra and Dhi Qar and 51 in Maysan,” Iraq’s metreology department said on Sunday.
It detailed that moderate winds are expected during the nighttime and cause dust storms.
Iraq is grappling with a hot summer, with temperatures often exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, exacerbated by declining rainfall, rampant desertification, and frequent dust storms.
Rampant desertification has caused frequent dust storms in Iraq, making them common in recent years.
Iraq experiences over 200 dusty days per year, according to data by the government, with the number projected to reach 300 by 2050 unless drastic steps to battle climate change are taken.
The United Nations ranks Iraq among the world's five most climate-vulnerable nations.
