ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Kurdistan Counter Terrorism (CT) announced that an unidentified suicide drone crashed into a camp for internally displaced Yazidis in the northern Zakho district of the Kurdistan Region, early Tuesday morning.
“In the early hours of Tuesday, at 00:30, a suicide drone crashed into the Darkar camp, located in Darkar sub-district, Zakho,” the CT stated, adding, "it did not cause any human casualties, but it did cause material damage.”
Jawhar Mohammed, mayor of Darkar, told The New Region that it is "the first time such an incident has happened in Darkar,” and explained that the drone hit a school building inside the camp.
“Security forces have launched an investigation into the attack,” Mohammed said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the drone attack as of this report.
In a separate incident, Kirkuk International Airport confirmed that three unidentified projectiles fell within the compound late Monday, injuring one person lightly.
“Two of the projectiles landed on the military side and one on the civilian side, causing a fire in the grass near the gate on the military side," the airport reported, adding that the blaze had been extinguished.
Although territorially defeated in 2017, Islamic State (ISIS) militants continue to pose a security threat across Iraq through sporadic hit-and-run attacks on remote areas. Iraqi forces have increased efforts to eliminate these remnants.
At least three senior ISIS members were killed in Palkana village, northern Kirkuk, on Sunday during a joint operation between Iraqi counterterrorism forces and the Kurdistan Region’s internal security forces (Asayish).
Seven years after the territorial defeat of ISIS, the Peshmerga and Iraqi armed forces routinely carry out joint operations to target the group’s remaining members, primarily in Kirkuk, Diyala, Salahaddin, and Nineveh provinces.
In 2024, Iraqi security forces arrested over 500 terror suspects, according to data from the Iraqi National Security Service.
