ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Iraqi Parliament is scheduled to hold a special session on Monday to discuss recent drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region’s energy infrastructure and the deadly fire at a shopping mall in Kut, which resulted in dozens of deaths.
The extraordinary session is expected to begin in the afternoon, according to an agenda published by the parliament’s media office. It will include discussions on “the Kut fire incident” and “the terrorist attacks with explosive drones on infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region.”
Earlier this week, at least 77 people died when a shopping mall caught fire in downtown Kut. The incident has led to the arrest of several officials, while others have been dismissed or suspended over negligence and complicity. The event prompted messages of solidarity from regional and international sources.
Following the incident, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s office announced that each family of the fire’s victims will receive a compensation of 10 million Iraqi dinars.
Another item on the agenda involves a general discussion about the recent spate of drone attacks aimed at oil fields across the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk.
The Region has experienced multiple assaults on its energy infrastructure sites in recent weeks, coinciding with the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel after a 12-day military conflict.
These drone attacks have been widely condemned by officials in the Kurdistan Region, with Aziz Ahmed, Deputy Chief of Staff to KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, stating on Saturday that the drones “flew” from Dibis, Kirkuk.
As of now, no parties have claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.
