Iran arrested over 700 suspected Israeli operatives during the 12-day war

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iranian authorities on Wednesday carried out the death sentence against an individual charged with cooperating with Israeli intelligence (Mossad), saying that the man had provided information that led to the killing of a nuclear scientist during the 12-day war.

Roozbeh Vadi was “arrested and tried on charges of espionage and intelligence cooperation in favor of the Zionist regime,” according to the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan Online. He was sentenced to death and executed on the same day.

Vadi, active in one of Iran’s “important and sensitive organizations,” was recruited online, participated in several evaluation stages, and had met with Mossad officers in Vienna on at least five occasions, according to Mizan.

“Vadi was responsible for sending organizational developments and available information to the service on a weekly basis and receiving a proportionate reward after answering the service's technical questions,” the judiciary added.

The Telegram channel of Amirkabir University of Technology claimed that Vadi was a PhD student in nuclear engineering at the university, and was a member of the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Institute affiliated with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

“In 2011, he published a joint article with two prominent nuclear experts, Abdolhamid Minouchehr and Ahmadreza Zolfaghari Daryani; individuals who were later killed during the 12-day war,” said the student news outlet.

Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Iran on June 13, targeting nuclear and military sites across the country, killing dozens of high-profile military commanders and nuclear scientists. Iran claims over 1,000 were killed in Israel’s bombing campaign.

Iran responded with missile and drone strikes on major cities, including Tel Aviv and Haifa, killing 28, according to Israeli officials.

Throughout the 12-day conflict, Iran arrested over 700 alleged Israeli agents in the country, according to local outlets. At least three had already been hanged prior to Vadi’s execution.

Iran carried out the death penalty of 975 people in 2024, according to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights’ (IHR) annual report which described the figure as a “horrifying escalation” and the highest execution rate in the country in the past 16 years.
