ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Kurdistan Region’s local security forces (Asayish) in Sulaimani on Wednesday announced the arrest of two ‘terrorists’ who allegedly planned to carry out an attack on a Sulaimani Civil Defense base.
“After thorough investigation and intelligence gathering, following the spread of a video on social media regarding threats and bombings, the General Directorate of Operations immediately managed to locate the terrorists in Sulaimani city through their investigations,” read a statement by Sulaimani Asayish on Wednesday.
“By order of the Security Investigation Court, they arrested them between June 22-24, 2025, with one of the terrorists being an employee of a civil defense base,” the statement added.
The pair allegedly confessed to attempting to poison the drinking water supply of a civil defense base in Sulaimani in their “first plan,” and following it by attaching explosives to vehicles such as firetrucks belonging to the base and detonating them.
“The terrorists have been arrested under Article (2) of the Terrorism Law, and investigations into their cases continue,” according to the statement.
Sulaimani security forces often engage in operations targeting terrorists in nearby provinces like Kirkuk; cases within areas falling under the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) jurisdiction, while less frequent, still occur.
The Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) in late July announced that they had arrested “two dangerous terrorists” in a joint operation with Iraq’s defense ministry in Sulaimani.
