Srwa Abdulwahid, head of the New Generation Movement bloc in the Iraqi parliament and sister of the party's imprisoned leader Shaswar Abdulwahid, has been called on to face trial in Sulaimani under Article 433 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which deals with public defamation and unsubstantiated accusations.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Sulaimani Court of Appeal on Saturday called the head of the New Generation Movement (NGM) bloc in the Iraqi parliament Srwa Abdulwahid to appear before the court for a trial.

A document dated July 7, obtained by The New Region, reveals that the Sulaimani Court of Appeal has requested the Iraqi parliament to open an investigation file against Srwa Abdulwahid, the sister of the recently detained NGM leader Shaswar Abdulwahid.

The request is issued under Article 433 of the Iraqi Penal Code, dealing with public defamation and unjust accusations without substantiated evidence.

The Sulaimani Court document was forwarded to the Iraqi parliament “for the purpose of notifying [the accused] to appear before this court on (12/23/2025),” read the document, adding that the order was issued “according to Article (433/Penal Code).”

The punishment for this offense involves up to four years’ imprisonment and a fine of between five to ten million dinars.

Srwa Abdulwahid has not yet responded to the Sulaimani Court or the Iraqi parliament regarding her attendance at the proceedings.

Shaswar Abdulwahid was arrested in Sulaimani on August 12 under Article 431 of the Iraqi Penal Code.

Article 431 of the Iraqi Penal Code states: "Whoever threatens another with committing a felony against himself or his property, or against the person or property of another, or with attributing or disclosing dishonorable matters in cases other than those specified in Article 430, shall be punished by detention."

The detention is in relation to a 2019 lawsuit by a former MP of his party, who accused Abdulwahid of threatening to publish explicit images of them.

Srwa Abdulwahid earlier in August said she had received “disturbing information” about her brother's condition, accusing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of “violating the law” by preventing family and colleagues from visiting him calling the detention “politically motivated” and warning that the public would not remain silent.
