A statement from Garmiyan police claimed that the suspects, reportedly two brothers, have had “issues” with the family in the past, without clarifying further.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – An attack by two knife-wielding suspects on a family in Garmiyan Administration’s Kifri left at least one member of the household killed and three others wounded on late Sunday.

Rafiq Qader, director of Kalar’s Shahid Hazhar Hospital, told The New Region that three members of the family were transferred to the hospital in the late hours of Sunday, among them a 21-year-old woman who succumbed to her wounds only minutes after being admitted.

“The other two wounded have also been stabbed four to five times each,” said Qader. “They have received preliminary treatment, but due to the severity of their wounds they have now been transferred to hospitals in Sulaimani.”

A statement from Garmiyan police claimed that the suspects, reportedly two brothers, have had “issues” with the family in the past, without clarifying further. Contrary to Qader’s statement, the police stated that three people were wounded; not two.

“The police have begun an investigation into the incident and one of the suspects has been detained in accordance with Article 405 [of the Iraqi Penal Code], and an arrest warrant has been issued for the second suspect,” the statement noted.

Article 405 of the Iraqi Penal Code reads: “Any person who willfully kills another is punishable by life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term of years.”
