ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Palestinian Hamas on Friday announced its acceptance of the key terms of the Gaza peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, stressing, however, that some of the points in the proposal must be discussed through “a comprehensive Palestinian national framework.”

In a statement on Friday, Hamad said it has conducted “in-depth consultations” within its leadership and with other Palestinian groups to respond to the proposal, expressing its appreciation for “the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of US President Donald Trump, calling for stopping the war on the Gaza Strip.

“Within this framework and to achieve the cessation of war and full [Israeli] withdrawal from the Strip, the movement announces its approval to release all occupation prisoners, alive and deceased, according to the exchange formula mentioned in President Trump’s proposal, and providing the field conditions for the exchange process,” said the Palestinian group, expressing its readiness to “immediately enter negotiations through mediators to discuss the details.”

“The movement also renews its approval to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian independent technocratic authority based on Palestinian national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic backing,” the statement added.

The group noted, however, that other issues in the proposal related to the future of the Gaza Strip and rights of the Palestinian people are “linked to a comprehensive national position,” and need to be “discussed through a comprehensive Palestinian national framework in which Hamas will participate and contribute responsibly.”

Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday announced their agreement on a peace plan for the Gaza Strip, soon entering its third year of Israeli military occupation.

Consisting of 20 points, the Trump-proposed plan would see an immediate ceasefire, the phased withdrawal of the Israeli military from the Strip, and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, before progressing into a longer-term security plan that involves the disarmament of the Palestinian militant group.

Earlier on Friday, Trump threatened that “all hell, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas” if the group does not agree to the proposal by Sunday.

A copy of the proposal published by the White House states as its fourth point: “Within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting this agreement, all hostages, alive and deceased, will be returned.”

The proposal also stipulates that Hamas must accept not having “any role in the governance of Gaza, directly, indirectly, or in any form.”

Israel's offensive in Gaza has killed over 66,000 people, most of whom are civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry, with growing international backlash, perhaps most salient in a torrent of recognition of Palestinian statehood by Western countries in recent times, placing pressure on Israel and its allies to bring a halt to the bloodshed.
