ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Badr Organization chief Hadi al-Amiri on Tuesday said that Iraq's incumbent Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has not requested a second term in office, adding that a decision will be made on the next premier following the conclusion of the country's ongoing parliamentary elections.
In an address to reporters after casting his vote, Amiri, a member of Iraq’s ruling Coordination Framework, said that Sudani "has not asked for a second term," and that the premiership will be “decided after the election [by the political powers]."
Iraq is currently carrying out elections for the country’s sixth parliamentary term post-2003, with more than 7,750 candidates competing for 329 seats in the legislature.
For the current elections, Sudani is leading his own coalition, the Reconstruction and Development Alliance, alongside former Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi and Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) chief Falih Al-Fayyadh.
The premier cast his vote early on Tuesday morning, asserting that his government has "placed great emphasis on stabilizing the political situation and carrying out peaceful dialogue" and that the elections are taking place in a "safe and stable environment" in the presence of international observors.
Around 20 million people have registered to cast their ballots in the upcoming general election, out of a total of some 29 million who were eligible to submit their biometric data to participate in the process.
Tuesday’s vote began at 7:00 am on Tuesday morning and is set to last until 6:00 pm on the same day.
