University of Sulaimani achieves high worldwide ranking

Founded in 1968, the University of Sulaimani is one of the biggest public universities in the Kurdistan Region and the first in Iraq to achieve the rating.

 

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A Shanghai higher education evaluation agency has ranked University of Sulaimani among the top 500 institutions worldwide for Civil Engineering and Mathematics. The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Higher Education celebrated the achievement as a significant step toward putting the Region’s universities on the global academic map.

 

The University of Sulaimani has achieved a ranking of 301-400 in Civil Engineering and 401-500 in Mathematics among universities worldwide, according to the Shanghai Institution's Global Academic Subject Rankings for 2025.

 

Founded in 1968, the University of Sulaimani is one of the biggest public universities in the Kurdistan Region and the first in Iraq to achieve the rating.

 

The higher education ministry congratulated the university’s staff and students on the accomplishment, saying that it “demonstrates the reality that Kurdistan's universities, through their work, aim to secure a better position on the global academic map.”

 

“This result also has a positive impact on the progress of academia and the scientific level of Kurdistan's universities in general,” the Kurdish ministry said in a statement, noting that the rating is based on faculty quality, research quality, research impact, and international collaboration.

 

The Shanghai Institution, established in 2023, is one of the world's most renowned university ranking institutions.

 

The University has five campuses consisting of various research centers, including Language and Culture, Gender Equality, Kurdology, Documentation and Academic Research, Pedagogical Training and Academic Development, among others.

 

It offers programs for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in various fields including dentistry, education, engineering law, medicine, languages, pharmacy, nursing, and science.
