ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – A recent attack targeting the Khor Mor gas field in the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani was launched from an area controlled by Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a security source told The New Region on Wednesday.

The finding is part of a series of revelations arrived at by a high-level investigative committee probing the incident, which consists of several high-ranking Iraqi security officials, including Iraq’s Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari and Kurdistan Region Interior Minister Reber Ahmed.

A strike targeted the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani’s Chamchamal district last week, shutting down production at the key field and slashing the Kurdistan Region’s electricity production for days.

The strike was heavily condemned regionally and internationally, with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in particular appealing for defense systems at the key facility – the largest of its kind in the Kurdistan Region.

The source further noted that the attack was carried out around 50 kilometers away from the Khor Mor field, near the Tuz Khurmatu district, and that the investigative committee has submitted a report to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, containing the its findings.

According to The New Region’s source, the field was surveilled by the perpetrators using drones, prior to targeting it with missiles.

Production has since been “restored to normal levels” and security at the facility has been strengthened, the UAE-based Dana Gas, who operate the field, announced earlier on Wednesday, thanking Erbil and Baghdad for the heightened security measures.
