Members of the Turkish parliamentary commission tasked with overseeing the peace process with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) visited the militant group's imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan in late November, hailing the "positive outcomes" reached from the discussion.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The Turkish parliamentary commission tasked with overseeing the peace process with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) said on Thursday it has entered the reporting stage after concluding the listening phase with a visit to jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan on Imrali Island.

A delegation from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), including chief negotiators Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar, as well as Ocalan’s lawyer, visited Ocalan in Turkey’s secluded Imrali prison island on Tuesday to discuss advancements to the Ankara-PKK peace process.

Ocalan warned “against sabotage attempts,” as cited by the DEM Party, and urged a correct approach to the peace process following the meeting.

The head of the commission and Turkish parliament, Numan Kurtulmus, warned all sides that the PKK-Ankara process is entering “its most serious period,” urging them to avoid using political differences “as fodder for their political positions.”

The commission, which has been tasked with drafting a legal framework for the peace process, in late November marked their first visit to Ocalan on Imrali Island, later asserting that “positive outcomes” had been reached.

"With this visit [to Imrali], our commission's listening phase has concluded. Thus, the commission has listened to various segments of society on this issue, those involved in this matter, and those who have been victimized in these processes. With this latest visit, the listening phase has been concluded," Kurtulmus said during the commission meeting session on Thursday.

“We are now moving into the reporting phase,” he said, adding that all reports from all sides have been collected.

Ocalan and the DEM Party have repeatedly expressed concern over the lack of concrete measures to establish a political framework ensuring the success of the peace process.

The DEM Party has been the main mediator between the PKK and the Turkish state in the recent peace process.

In late November, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan described the ongoing peace process between Ankara and the PKK as “progressing positively,” saying efforts “continue.”

Ocalan made a historic call from prison in February, which was subsequently followed by the PKK announcing its intention to lay down its arms and dissolve in May.

In July, dozens of PKK fighters burned their weapons in a symbolic disarmament ceremony in the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani province, and earlier this month, the group announced it would completely withdraw from Turkish soil.
