Kocyigit said that the published summary omits Ocalan’s remarks where he expressed concern that a potential fall of democracy in Syria would prevent the integration of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic forces (SDF) into the Syrian state. She noted that only parts in support of a united Syria were included.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – A pro-Kurdish lawmaker on Friday said that the jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan’s remarks in the minutes published by the Parliament’s presidency are “far from” reflecting his true statements or the “spirit of the meeting,” asserting that parts on the integration of Kurdish-led forces into the Syrian state were censored.

A delegation from the Turkish parliamentary commission tasked with drafting a legal framework for the Ankara-PKK peace process met with Ocalan on Monday on the Imrali prison island, following which a four-page minute was released by the parliament’s presidency, summarizing key points of the discussion.

“There was a 16-page minute which we signed as three members” representing the three parties who attended the meeting, who “have no signature under this newly published report,” and no part in “the designing of the text,” Gulistan Kocyigit, a lawmaker for the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), told local media.

“We didn't know either; we found out yesterday,” she added.

The published summary “is far from reflecting the views of Mr. Ocalan as a whole and the spirit of the meeting,” the DEM Party lawmaker argued, noting that “his [Ocalan’s] very deep evaluations are summarized in one sentence or two and not reflecting the context. This method is not correct and we do not accept it.”

DEM Party, the main mediator between the PKK and the Turkish state in the peace process, and Ankara’s main opposition, the Republican People's Party (CHP), have repeatedly called on the parliament’s presidency to release the full minutes to the public, with Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) refusing the demand.

Samil Tayyar, former AKP deputy, responded to Kocyigit’s comments, stating that if the Imrali meeting minutes were to be released in full, DEM party would “suffer the most damage.”

The PKK leader had argued that if a democratic transition does not take place in Syria “Sharaa will also turn into a dictator and bring pain to Syrians again,” according to Kocyigit. “There is no emphasis on these in this summary text.”

“If the system in Syria is going to turn into yet another dictatorship, then of course the Kurdish forces themselves will not be part of that dictatorship,” the lawmaker said, citing Ocalan, noting that the Kurdish leader has not instructed the SDF to dissolve as the PKK.

Ocalan made a historic call from prison in February, calling on the PKK to disarm and dissolve. The group announced its commitment to Ocalan’s call in May.

In July, dozens of PKK fighters burned their weapons in a symbolic disarmament ceremony in the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani province. In November, the group announced it would completely withdraw from Turkish soil.
