ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The United States and its partners have carried out "nearly 80" operations against "terrorist operatives,” including Islamic State (ISIS) remnants in Syria since July, the US army said in a statement, as the jihadists continue to pose a threat across Syria.
"ISIS has inspired at least 11 plots or attacks against targets in the United States over the past year," the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a report on Wednesday, adding that the CENTCOM operations, in return, have led to "119 terrorists detained and 14 killed over the last six months."
"We are steadfast in our relentless pursuit of terrorists who seek to harm Americans and our interests abroad,” CENTCOM added, quoting its chief Admiral Brad Cooper. "We have now had multiple instances of collaboration with the Syrian government to counter specific ISIS threats."
Despite being territorially defeated in 2019, ISIS still poses a security threat across Syria, with Washington blaming the group for killing at least three US servicemen in Palmyra earlier in the week.
CENTCOM announced in late September that it had killed 37 "terrorists" affiliated with ISIS, and an al-Qaeda linked group leader in two separate "targeted strikes” in Syria, in addition to myriad other operations destroying weapons caches and artillery belonging to the group.
Syria joined the international coalition in November, becoming the body’s 90th partner to join the global fight against ISIS.
The announcement was made a day after Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa visited the US and met with US President Donald Trump, during which Washington temporarily suspended key Caesar Act sanctions on Damascus and suggested that Syria should join the coalition.
