"Regarding the number of damaged cars, according to the latest data, they number 651 automobiles," he added.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least 651 cars were damaged in the Chamchamal district of Sulaimani during the recent powerful flash floods, the town’s traffic director told The New Region on Thursday, with a committee in place to compensate the owners.

 

"A special committee was formed to compensate those whose cars were damaged. We made an announcement and those whose cars were damaged visited us and received a form entailing the cars' information and the damage they were subjected to," Omar Ali told The New Region.

 

"Regarding the number of damaged cars, according to the latest data, they number 651 automobiles," he added.

 

Intense flash floods swept through Chamchamal last week, amid a broader wave of flooding that took the region by storm. Several cities in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq were affected, Chamchamal however was struck particularly intensely, where it killed at least two people.

 

In addition to the vehicles, hundreds of homes, shops, businesses and properties were inundated and damaged, and electricity and internet services were cut. Floodwaters also submerged hundreds of fish ponds.

 

Local relief campaigns have been launched to provide food and basic supplies to affected families.
 
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has formed compensation committees in affected areas to assess damages and support victims.
 
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani directed authorities to support relief efforts, offering his condolences to the victims impacted by the disaster.
