ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has placed “a lot of focus” on obtaining local support for Rojava (northeast Syria) during its participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said on Thursday, as Damascus-linked factions continue attacks on Kurdish-led forces.
“After the unfortunate events that took place in Kurdistan’s Rojava, we put a lot of focus on gathering international backing to stop the fighting and clashes … we spoke with world leaders seriously and in detail, and we hope that it yields results,” Barzani told reporters on the sidelines of the forum.
The premier also highlighted efforts made by President Masoud Barzani to stop the fighting, saying the top Kurdish leader has held calls with Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa to “request an end to the war.”
“They have promised that they are not in favor of war, but an agreement must be reached that is respected and accepted by both sides,” Barzani said.
The Rojava developments were added to Prime Minister Barzani’s agenda during his visit to Davos after tensions surged, with the premier’s high-level delegation having primarily traveled to discuss investment opportunities in the Kurdistan Region.
Barzani also said that the Erbil-based Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) has succeeded in entering Rojava to provide critical aid to residents, stressing, “We will not let our brothers and sisters be alone.”
BCF President Musa Ahmed told The New Region on Thursday that it has provided 200 people in Qamishli with medical treatment, with most being children.
“Our main goal is to deliver humanitarian aid and assistance to all Kurds in Western Kurdistan; what we do is a national and humanitarian duty, not a favor,” Ahmed asserted.
The Syrian Arab Army has waged a violent campaign on areas held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) since early January, with Damascus-linked factions rapidly advancing toward Rojava despite several fragile ceasefires.
