SDF-affiliated media claimed earlier on Monday that at least two of the five who were killed in the Kharab Ashk strikes were children.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least five people were killed and five others were injured in an attack by Damascus-affiliated factions in a village in Kobane's southeastern outskirts, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Monday.

The factions targeted the village of Kharab Ashk with “intense shelling,” using artillery, tanks, and unmanned aerial vehicles, the SDF said, despite a 15-day ceasefire that was announced on Saturday between the two warring sides.

“The attack resulted in the martyrdom of five civilians and the injury of five others,” all of whom were members of the same family, it also led to the “complete destruction of the family's home, as the wounded were transferred to hospitals for medical treatment,” the SDF added.

The Kurdish-led group said that the bodies of the victims remain under rubble “due to the intensity of the bombardment.”

The attack on Kobane's surrounding villages comes amid a suffocating siege imposed on the Kurdish city by Damascus, as part of a broader military campaign by the Islamist-led Syrian government against SDF-held areas.

A week into the siege, at least five children have died from severe cold and lack of medical supplies, according to Rojava’s Kurdish Red Crescent. A UN convoy of 24 trucks loaded with aid reached Kobane Sunday.

SDF-affiliated media claimed earlier on Monday that at least two of the five who were killed in the Kharab Ashk strikes were children.

Around 200,000 people from Kobane’s surrounding villages have fled their villages and are currently living in Kobane, Berivan Issa, co-chair of the Humanitarian Affairs Office in Kobane, told The New Region on Saturday.

Damascus’ continued shelling and siege of Kobane coincide with the 11th anniversary of the defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the symbolic city after months of warfare.
