Shaibani said that Syria's "main priority" is to see the integration of the Kurdish-led force succeed, adding that their approach with the SDF is dependent on "the interests of our nation."

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Syria’s foreign minister on Saturday said that Damascus views the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as “partners” rather than enemies, after weeks-long clashes between the two sides ended in late January with an integration agreement.

Speaking at a panel in the Munich Security Conference on Wednesday, Assad al-Shaibani said that the Syrian government does not see the Kurdish-led force "as enemies, we see them as partners," adding that "we are very keen to help them also to be part of the Syrian government."

The SDF announced an integration and ceasefire agreement with the Syrian government in late January, putting an end to a Damascus offensive against Rojava (northeast Syria) that spanned the better part of the month.

Shaibani said that Syria's "main priority" is to see the integration of the Kurdish-led force succeed, adding that their approach with the SDF is dependent on "the interests of our nation."

The January 29 agreement saw the entry of Syrian government forces into Kurdish-held areas in Hasaka province, as well as the appointment of the SDF-backed Nureddin Issa, a Kurd, as Hasaka's governor.

Syria's ambassador to the UN Ibrahim Olabi on Friday said that "northeast Syria [Rojava] is no longer a complex challenge but rather a national Syrian accomplishment that culminates in a successful path towards stabilization," adding that the integration of Rojava's institutions into the Syrian state has already begun.

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi and Rojava's foreign relations co-chair Elham Ahmed have joined Shaibani to participate in the Munich Security Conference, as part of Syria's delegation to the summit.
