ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, is scheduled to visit Iran on Sunday to discuss bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Iran. He will arrive in Tehran tomorrow evening and will meet with senior Iranian officials.
Barzani will meet with Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President Ebrahim Raisi, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and other officials to “discuss bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iran,” according to Iranian media Mehr News, in addition to political, economic, security and cultural issues.
Nechirvan Barzani intends to enhance and improve relations between Erbil and Tehran. He has previously assured Iran that the Kurdistan Region does not pose a threat and that they intend to establish good relations.
Nechirvan Barzani's visit to Tehran follows a visit to Baghdad that lasted several days last week, which helped create a new phase in the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad.
President Nechirvan Barzani of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq made two notable visits to the Islamic Republic of Iran in past years. During his visit to Tehran Iin 2018, as Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region then, he held meetings with the Iranian President, Parliament Speaker, and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
His most recent visit was in 2021, where he attended the inauguration ceremony of Iran's President, Ebrahim Raisi, in his capacity as the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
