Prime Minister Barzani stressed that the recent power cuts in the Kurdistan Region are “temporary”, caused by circumstances out of then government’s control.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday said that Erbil has become a target for “terrorist” groups amid the ongoing regional escalations, urging Baghdad to prevent such attacks as Erbil cannot remain silent for long.

The Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil has repeatedly come under attack in recent days, with dozens of aerial objects intercepted on a daily basis, as Iran and its proxies target US bases and missions across the broader region as part of the Islamic republic’s retaliatory campaign.

“It is unfortunate that our region is going through these difficult times, but even more unfortunate is that in recent days, some outlaw and terrorist parties have targeted Erbil,” Prime Minister Barzani said on Tuesday.

The attacks on Erbil have targeted the US Consulate General and a military base of the US-led coalition located inside the international airport. None of the projectiles have successfully hit their targets, but the debris from the intercepted objects frequently spark blazes and have resulted in material damage.

“I thank the people of Kurdistan for their patience, and I assure you we will do everything to ensure our people are safe, our Kurdistan is protected, and we are kept away from all wars and chaos,” said the Kurdish premier, expressing hopes for a swift end to the hostilities and a return of stability to the region.

In light of the attacks, several foreign oil and gas producers operating in the Kurdistan Region have halted their work in an effort to protect staff.

Since Saturday, the war has disrupted much of the gas production in the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province, the main supplier of electricity in the Kurdistan Region, leading to frequent power cuts.

Prime Minister Barzani stressed that the recent power cuts in the Kurdistan Region are “temporary”, caused by circumstances out of then government’s control.

The Islamic republic has yet to claim responsibility for any attacks on the Kurdistan Region. However, an Iran-backed Iraqi militia by the name of Saraya Awliya al-Dam has on multiple occasions claimed responsibility for the attacks on Erbil.

Pro-Iran Iraqi militias have repeatedly targeted the Kurdistan Region in recent years under different pretexts. Some of these groups have been officially incorporated into the state security apparatus as part of the Popular Mobilization Movement (PMF).

“We call on the federal government to not allow these outlaw terrorists to keep attacking Kurdistan, because we too cannot remain silent forever,” said Prime Minister Barzani.

During a extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council on Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani directing security forces to counter any action that would drag the country into broader regional conflicts, amid increased security risks from pro-Iran protesters and armed groups.

“The Council emphasized that while the State guarantees freedom of expression, the right to peaceful assembly, and the protection of citizens' rights… it stresses the Iraqi government's commitment to preventing attacks on diplomatic missions or vital infrastructure,” read a statement from Sudani’s office.
