ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani on Sunday said that they have submitted to Baghdad the names of those responsible for the recent attacks on the Kurdistan Region, warning that "we will deal with them ourselves" if no action is taken.
The Kurdistan Region has come under a spate of drone attacks since the breakout of a war between the US, Israel, and Iran. Many of the attacks have been claimed by pro-Iran Iraqi groups, and Baghdad has thus far proved inept at curbing the offenses.
"We have submitted the names of certain individuals and parties to Baghdad who are carrying out attacks against the Kurdistan Region. We await Baghdad to take serious steps toward implementing the necessary measures," said the PUK leader in a statement posted to X, warning that should no action be taken, "then we will deal with them ourselves."
Erbil has been targeted with dozens of drones since the war broke out. At least one member of Erbil's local security forces (Asayish), Welat Tahir, was killed in one of the strikes targeting Erbil International Airport on Saturday.
Sulaimani, unlike Erbil, does not have any sort of air defense capability, leading to surreal scenes of hundreds of bullets in the night sky on late Saturday and early Sunday hours. Local security forces scrambled to intercept oncoming drone strikes with rounds from handheld automatic rifles as the city was subjected to intense shelling with several drones.
"In the past few days, we have pursued all our diplomatic efforts, engaging at the highest levels with the leaders of Iran, the United States, and Turkey, with the aim of safeguarding Kurdistan in this situation," Talabani noted.
US President Donald Trump told reporters on Saturday that he does not want Kurdish forces to launch a ground offensive into Iran. "We’re not looking to the Kurds going in,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “We are very friendly with the Kurds … but we don’t want to make the war any more complex than it already is.”
"Following the remarks of President Trump and President [Masoud] Pezeshkian, we await that the turmoil will be driven away from the Kurdistan Region," the PUK leader noted, without specifying details.
Iran's Pezeshkian on Saturday apologized to neighboring Gulf and Middle Eastern states, whose territory has been targeted in Iran's retaliatory strikes on US interests across the region.
The Kurdistan Region's leaders have communicated with both sides of the conflict and have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to staying neutral. US President Donald Trump reportedly held phone calls with President Masoud Barzani as well as Talabani shortly after the start of the conflict.
