ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday condemned an attack targeting its Consulate General compound in Erbil, calling on both the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to investigate the matter.
Another round of drones targeted Erbil late Monday night, with the Kurdistan Region's counterterrorism group announcing that the US-led coalition had shot down four drones. Nonetheless, fragments of the intercepted projectiles crashed in parts of the city, causing blazes.
The United Arab Emirates “strongly condemned” the “unprovoked terrorist drone attack that targeted the UAE Consulate General in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” the Emirati foreign ministry wrote in a statement on Tuesday, adding that other than material damage, no injuries were reported from the attack.
The foreign ministry called on the Iraqi government and the KRG to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and held accountable.
Iran and its proxies have targeted what they view as American and Israeli interests across the Middle East, after a US-Israeli military campaign on Iran that started in late February which killed Iranian leader Ali Khamenei was killed.
The UAE defense ministry on Monday said that it had been targeted by 253 ballistic missiles since the start of the “Iranian attacks,” of which 233 were destroyed, as well as a total of 1,440 UAVs, 1,359 of which have been intercepted.
In a statement on Tuesday morning, Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry strongly condemned the attack on the Emirati mission, describing it as a “clear violation of relevant international norms and laws,” and stressed the inviolability of diplomatic missions under the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949.
Groups operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella of pro-Iran factions within Iraq, have claimed responsibility for many of the attacks on Erbil, most notably a group called Saraya Awliya al-Dam. The pro-Iran IRI claimed one of Monday's attack on the Kurdish capital as well, claiming it “hit its target perfectly.”
Kurdistan Region leaders have warned Baghdad of the dire consequences, and have called on the Iraqi government to contain the threats, warning that if Baghdad does not take action, Erbil will.
