The three individuals, who have yet to be named by police, were all brothers and Norwegian citizens of Iraqi descent.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Norwegian police announced on Wednesday that three brothers, all Norwegian citizens of Iraqi descent, have been arrested in connection with Sunday's "terrorist bombing" at the United States Embassy in Oslo.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, did not lead to any casualties and inflicted minor damage to the embassy building.

Police prosecutor Christian Hatlo told reporters that investigators believe one of the brothers placed the bomb outside the embassy while the other two helped carry out the attack. Hatlo noted that the investigation is now focused on uncovering a motive and figuring out exactly what role each brother played, adding that the three men are in their 20s and were not previously known to police.

Hatlo noted that investigators are still working from "several hypotheses," including whether the attack was an "order from a government entity." He explained that this line of inquiry is "quite natural given the target — the US embassy — and the security situation the world is in today," while adding that they are also not ruling out potential links to "criminal networks."

Iran and pro-Iran actors have extensively targeted US diplomatic facilities in the Middle East since the commencement of a US-Israeli military offensive against Iran in late February, with the US embassy in Baghdad and Consulate General in Erbil being attacked on a near-daily basis.

In its annual threat assessment released in February, the Norwegian security service PST identified Iran as one of the primary threats to the country, noting that it could use "proxy actors," such as "criminal networks," to carry out attacks.

The explosion occurred around 1:00 am on Sunday at the entrance to the embassy's consular section, causing no injuries and only "minor damage," the police department said in a statement.

Earlier this week, Norwegian police confirmed that a video featuring Iran's late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — killed by US-Israeli strikes on the first day of their war against Iran — was uploaded to the US Embassy’s Google Maps page around the time of the incident.

According to the Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, the video was accompanied by a Farsi caption that read, "God is great. We are victorious."

"The police are conducting several inquiries related to the video but we do not wish to comment on any further details at this time," the investigators' statement said.

PST spokesman Martin Bernsen told AFP there was "no change" to the threat assessment level in Norway, which has been at three on a five-point scale since November 2024.
